Starting from Goal 14 of the 2030 Agenda, the sculpture students of the Pietro Selvatico Art High School, guided by professors Tavian and Filippi, analysed several critical issues related to the pollution of seas and oceans and designed a series of artistic installations intended to draw attention to the questions raised. The theme, which is particularly important to Veneto di Venezia, a long‑standing promoter of sustainability within the island’s regeneration project active for almost twenty years, led to the concrete realisation of one of the projects by these young artists, who are close to graduation. “Oceano – liberazione” is an installation consisting of three whale tails made with a supporting structure built from waste materials from the island’s construction sites, reclaimed material from the jetties, bamboo canes, a covering of driftwood, briccole carried by the current, and discarded fishing nets. Two of the tails are entangled in fishing nets which, often abandoned in the sea after use, become deadly traps, while the third rises free as a positive sign of hope for a future of harmony and synergy between human beings and the environment.
